The social aspect of learning is curcial and our classroom design should reflect that. I fyou can't have tables in your classroom, arrange your desks to facilitate discussion and teamwork. Use flexible reading groups to allow your students to work together often with different combinations of peers (Opitz and Ford, 2001). And give your students frequent opportunities to have real conversations about books (Allington, 2001).
