A loft can create a great natural environment for individual or small group reading. Use it for a change of environment, a quiet area, a place for down-time, or to give you more grouping options for guided and independent reading in your classroom. A loft or other cozy area can also help mimic adult reading behavior. Providing lots of reading materials and a comfortable place for independent reading are crucial to reading instruction (Routman, 2002).
